About
Green gas or biomethane is produced by renewable means such as biogas from anaerobic digestion, landfill gas and synthetic gas (‘syngas’) from the gasification of biomass.
The Green Gas Certification Scheme (GGCS) has been set up to track green gas through the supply chain to provide certainty for those who buy it. It tracks the contractual rather than the physical flow to ensure there is no double-counting from production to end-use.
The scheme is run by the Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd which is a subsidiary of the Renewable Energy Association
The brief
The early days of green energy distribution were blighted by the double counting of units and inconsistency of reporting. A recent change in the law has meant that producers of green gas can inject directly into the national grid. Green gas is now flowing in the UK and the GGCS has been launched in response to industry demand for certification and to ensure that green gas is not doubly sold.
We have worked with the Renewable Energy Association on a number of projects and they approached us to design and build a system that would under pin the scheme; tracking the injection and trading of green gas and providing authentication.
Our solution
We created a web-based system that tracks each unit of green gas injected into the national grid. Each kWh of gas has its own unique reference number which is made up of information about its origin. The system tracks its flow through the network; from its injection into the grid, the sale from producer to supplier, any intra-supplier trading that takes place between suppliers & traders, to its end sale to a consumer.
Participants in the scheme (gas producers, suppliers and traders) have their own dedicated account where they log their involvement and the system generates verifiable certificates. The system also features a back-end reporting function that allows the Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd team to manage accounts and run reports on the amount of gas injected and sold through the network.
