About
dysTalk is an information-sharing social enterprise launched by Will Orr-Ewing and Josh Pull in September 2008. It's for parents of children who are not achieving their potential because of learning difficulties - of whatever degree - but who are unsure of the issues and do not know where to go or who to see next.
The Brief
We met Will Orr-Ewing and Josh Pull, the founders of dysTalk, right at the beginning of the project. They were running a series of talks on learning difficulties and wanted to enable attendees to discuss the issues raised online. The idea was to create a website where parents could find out more about learning difficulties and the help that’s available. By bringing together offline talks and online discussion in this way, Will and Josh ulimately aimed to help children with learning difficulties achieve their potential.
Our solution
We delivered a website that achieves everything Will and Josh were looking for. dysTalk.com has three main areas: Talks, Articles and the dysForum. The first two contain content produced by dysTalk and the third is a discussion area for visitors to the site.
The Talks section of the site publicises upcoming talks and hosts videos, audio recordings and notes from the talks once they have happened. Embedded video, YouTube-style, makes it easy for visitors to view the talks. Everything is run from one database and a private interface makes it easy for dysTalk to administrate each event.
The dysForum allows parents to discuss anything with other visitors to the site. It was designed to make posting a new topic or message as easy as possible; people don’t even need to register. A great deal of thought was also put into how the message board itself works; it's designed to be conducive to constructive discussion.
The entire dysTalk site has been produced with expansion in mind. Although everyone expects it to be a success, no-one knows where this project will go, and the technology supports that. Intelligent design decisions ensure that whatever Will and Josh do to keep dysTalk up-to-date, dysTalk.com will follow.
