About

Chalkboard Learning is an innovative online learning platform for children aged 9-11. The platform provides practice questions and exams for maths and verbal reasoning that adapt to suit a child’s ability, helping them to learn more effectively. The system also helps a parent to monitor their child’s performance as it saves and automatically analyses their test results.

The brief

Long standing clients of ours, Josh and Will, the team behind Keystone Tutors and dysTalk, approached us with the exciting idea of creating a tailor-made adaptive testing platform where children can take maths and verbal reasoning tests, either in practice or in timed exam mode.

The system would include a database of thousands of questions, broken down into specific topics that get easier or harder depending on the child’s performance. The system needed to  track a child’s test results, charting their scores and providing their parents with detailed reporting, making it easy for them to monitor their child’s progress.

Parents would pay an annual subscription fee to allow their child access to the full system, so the site also needed to include an e-commerce facility.

The team at Chalkboard also requested a business reporting back-end that would enable them to manage member accounts and run reports on member sign ups and overall revenue.

Our solution

We created a totally bespoke system to match Chalkboard’s detailed spec, working alongside them to refine and streamline elements as the project progressed.

At the front-end we’ve designed a website that is attractive and engaging to the two main audiences: children and their parents. It’s essential that the site is appealing and friendly to the child whilst being secure, trustworthy and informative to the parent.

Based on the educational premise that practice is most effective when students work on questions that are neither too hard nor too easy, the Chalkboard platform is designed to be adaptive. As a student works through each test the questions become easier or harder depending on their previous answers.

The testing module is designed to be really user-friendly, clearly presenting the questions to the child, allowing them to work through the test and giving them a test result on completion.

The outcome of each test, in both practice and exam mode, are saved in an individual student’s account. Parents are then able to access the results of their child’s work and see how they are progressing. This section gives a detailed breakdown showing the level reached in every topic and sub- topic, meaning a parent is able to identify strengths and weakness and track their child’s performance.

We also integrated Barclays secure online payment processing, and created a business reporting back end that allowed the Chalkboard team to monitor account activity, sign ups and run reports on revenues generated.
